Rongai Route- Northern Approach climb

Book the 7-day Rongai Route: High success rate climb from the quieter, drier north face. Includes JRO transfers and essential acclimatization via Third Cave.

ITINERARY OVERVIEW

Rongai – The Safer, Scenic North Face Traverse

The 7-Day Rongai Route is the recommended choice for climbers seeking the unique beauty and solitude of the mountain’s northern flank. This route’s path is typically drier and less crowded. Crucially, this itinerary includes a dedicated acclimatization day at the Third Cave, dramatically improving your body’s readiness for the summit push. You will trek through remote highlands, across the incredible Kibo Saddle, and achieve the highest chance of success on this stunning, remote traverse to Uhuru Peak (19,341 ft).

Welcome to Tanzania! Upon landing at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), a friendly GEOMURO TRAVEL representative will warmly greet you and provide a comfortable, shared transfer to your hotel in Arusha. Your accommodations are selected for comfort, featuring cozy rooms, reliable hot water, a swimming pool, and complimentary Internet access. In the early evening, you will meet with our managers and head guide for a comprehensive pre-climb briefing. We’ll finalize gear checks, review safety protocols, and outline the 7-day plan, ensuring you are mentally and physically ready for the adventure ahead.

Logistics Note: Private tour packages include shared airport transfers. Please coordinate your group’s arrival times to avoid additional individual transfer charges.

After breakfast, we drive to the remote Rongai Gate at Nale Moru on the north side. The initial trail cuts through a lighter, drier rainforest before opening into the heath zone. We climb steadily, enjoying the solitude of the northern approach, and set up camp at Simba Camp (9,300 ft) near First Cave, with magnificent views out over the plains of Kenya.

  • Hiking: 4-5 hours

  • Overnight Altitude: approx. 9,300 ft.

Meal Plan:

Diner
Accommodation Selection:
Simba Camp (Tents).

We continue our steady climb through the moorland. The path is lined with heather and scrub, offering increasing views of the massive Kibo Peak ahead. We reach the shelter of Second Cave (11,300 ft), a vital stop where we settle in for the night, well-positioned for the acclimatization day tomorrow.

This is the key difference maker! This dedicated acclimatization day is spent with a short, controlled hike toward Third Cave (11,811 ft). This “climb high, sleep low” maneuver, followed by relaxing and hydrating at camp, dramatically improves your body’s efficiency at altitude, boosting your summit success chances while you enjoy the unique landscape of the north side.

  • Hiking: 3-4 hours (Short, acclimatization hike)

  • Overnight Altitude: approx. 11,811 ft.

Meal Plan:

We ascend into the high, rocky highlands, traversing toward the colossal Mawenzi Peak. We reach the exceptionally remote and beautiful Mawenzi Tarn Hut (14,160 ft). This campsite is nestled in a high valley, offering stunning views and a final remote night before joining the busier central route.

  • Hiking: 4-5 hours

  • Overnight Altitude: approx. 14,160 ft.

Meal Plan:
Breakfast
Lunch

Accommodation Selection:
Mawenzi Tarn Hut (Tents).

We cross the vast, desolate, and high-altitude Kibo Saddle—an almost lunar landscape linking the two main peaks. The trek is challenging but visually rewarding. We arrive at Kibo Hut (15,430 ft), the exposed base camp at the foot of the summit cone. The afternoon is crucial for final preparations: organizing gear, hydrating, and resting for the midnight start.

  • Hiking: 6-8 hours

  • Overnight Altitude: approx. 15,430 ft.

Meal Plan:
Breakfast
Lunch
Diner
Accommodation Selection:
Kibo Hut (Huts, utilized by all Rongai climbers).

The final test begins at midnight. We ascend slowly up the dark, steep scree, aiming for Gilman’s Point and ultimately Uhuru Peak (19,341 ft) at sunrise. The view from the “Roof of Africa” is your ultimate reward. After the celebration, we begin the long descent back to Kibo Hut for a quick lunch and continue all the way down the Marangu side to Horombo Hut (12,205 ft) for a well-deserved, full night’s sleep.

  • Hiking: 7-9 hours ascent, 5-7 hours descent (Total 12-16 hours)

  • Summit Altitude: approx. 19,341 ft.

Our perfect 3 day in Tanzania💝 Our 3-day trip to Tanzania was honestly one of the best experiences with Geomuro Travel. We were able to visit two of Tanzania's famous parks Serengeti and Ngorongoro. We started in the Serengeti, there were zebras, elephants, and even lions just chilling under the trees. We got lucky and spotted a leopard up in a tree too, that moment was very exciting. Definitely one of the best experiences of our life.

It was the most beautiful and first-time safari experience. Our 3 day group joining safari in Tanzania was so beautiful and we felt very comfortable with Geomuro Travel. We explored Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater. We started at Serengeti. Our guide was very experienced and shared so much knowledge about the animals and the land. He made the whole trip feel safe, comfortable, and full of learning. We saw lions resting in the grass, elephants walking peacefully across the plains, zebras and wildebeests moving together in huge herds & it was really exciting. Our last day at Ngorongoro Crater and definitely we felt like a world of its own, full of life everywhere we looked. Our love for Tanzania's wildlife and nature was very strong on this trip.

Peaceful journey in Tanzania. The 6-Day Selous and Mikumi Adventure was a great combination of wildlife experiences with Geomuro Travel. Our guide, was an excellent driver and made sure we had a smooth and enjoyable journey. The boat safari in Selous was incredible, allowing us to see crocodiles and hippos. The walking safari was an exciting experience, as we ventured on foot with armed rangers, definitely one of the highlights. Afterward, we spent two days exploring Mikumi National Park, where we spotted giraffes, zebras, and even leopards. The wildlife was abundant, and the experience will be a memory for the rest of our lives.

Tanzania gave us so much more than we expected. Celebrating our 1st wedding anniversary in Tanzania with Geomuro Travel. We decided to mark this special milestone with a 7-day safari adventure. We explored Lake Mayrana, Serengeti National Park and Tarengire National Park. Our guide was awesome, friendly and always tried to answer our questions. He made our safari gorgeous and fun. Lake Manyara, was the perfect way to start the trip. It was peaceful and full of life-birds everywhere, monkeys jumping through trees, and that calm water reflecting the sky. In Serengeti, we watched herds of wildebeest and zebras moving across the vast grasslands felt like stepping into a living documentary.Every day was filled with wonder, laughter and pure joy. The safari truly reminded us how beautiful the world is and how important it is to slow down and just live in the moment. Our journey will forever be in our hearts.

It was very special safari for us. Our 3 days in Mikumi National Park with my girlfriend was really one of the best experience. It was the best decision we chose for Geomuro Travel. Our first game drive was very exciting. The park isn’t crowded, so it gives you this peaceful, close-to-nature vibe that makes the whole experience more special. Within an hour we were already seeing elephants, giraffes, zebras, and even a couple of lions just chilling under a tree. Mikumi NP might not be the most famous park in Tanzania, but that’s exactly what makes it so beautiful. It’s raw, calm, and still wild in the best way. We felt our whole safari was peaceful and memorable.

This safari completely stole our hearts. We did a 2-day safari through Ngorongoro, and every day had something new that left us speechless. As a Tanzaniam local tour operator Geomuro Travel was really good one. Their guidece and hospitality made our journey enjoyable.Ngorongoro completely blew us away. We see so much wildlife in one place - zebras, buffalo, even rhinos if you’re lucky. And the scenery itself, with that mix of crater walls, lakes, and grasslands, is something pictures can’t really capture. It was special journey celebrating our together in the middle of nature, with moments we’ll never forget. Tanzania gave us memories that are gonna stay with us forever.
